Dear Patients and Friends,
This week, I’m doing my first plasma donation. Many of you know that during COVID I donated over 3 gallons of platelets, and I wanted to share why plasma donation is so important — and why it’s often preferred over other types of blood donations. I donate my rocket fuel just down the street at the Stanford Blood Center. They have centers all over the Bay Area.
What Is Plasma?
Plasma is the liquid portion of your blood. It carries:
Antibodies
Clotting factors
Proteins that support healing and immunity
In fact, over 50% of your blood volume is plasma.
Why Is Plasma So Valuable?
Plasma is essential for patients who:
Have immune deficiencies
Are undergoing cancer treatment
Have bleeding or clotting disorders
Experience severe trauma or burns
Need life-saving medications derived from plasma proteins
Many modern therapies literally cannot be made without donated plasma.
Why Plasma Is Often Preferred Over Other Donations
Here’s what makes plasma unique:
You can donate more often
Plasma regenerates quickly, allowing donation every few weeks (sometimes sooner, depending on guidelines).
One donation helps many patients
Plasma is separated into multiple therapies, meaning a single donation can impact several lives.
Critical for long-term treatments
Unlike whole blood (often used urgently), plasma supports chronic and ongoing medical care.
Highly needed year-round
Demand for plasma never slows down — shortages directly affect patient care.
How Plasma Donation Works
Blood is drawn, plasma is separated, and your red blood cells are returned to you. It’s safe, well-regulated, and the body replaces plasma quickly with proper hydration and nutrition.
Why I’m Sharing This
As a physician, I see firsthand how these therapies change lives. As a donor, I see how simple it is to help. My hope is that by sharing this experience, I can encourage even one more person to consider donating.
If you’ve ever wondered whether donating plasma makes a difference — it absolutely does.
Thank you for being part of a community that cares about health, healing, and helping others.
Warm regards,
Douglas S. Robinson, DPM

Happiness is having dogs. Over the years, our family has been blessed with the love of dogs, horses, kitties, and even a few birds. These four dogs have filled our lives with joy, though our beloved dash hounds have recently gone to doggy heaven. They’ll forever live in our hearts.
